Why does my male cat clean my female cats kittens then bite them?

My female cat had kittens and they're 2 months old today and my older male cat (we think he's the dad because some of them are long haired and he's long haired) cleans them then pins them down and bites them, then when I take the kitten away from him he shakes his tail and backs off. why does he do this?
