Xbox live gold was canceled, on website says "gold account" in game says "free" but i can still play, how?

My xbox broke awhile back, and I changed credit cards that the subscription was under. Recently I gained an xbox, recovered my account and it says "free membership" on the console but allows me to play online in call of duty. However, on the website it says "gold membership". What's going on? I'm not complaining about the freebie but I am just wondering if this will last awhile or some kind of trial.
